Understanding Changing Lines

Changing lines are the key to unlocking the deeper wisdom of the I Ching. They represent points of transformation and dynamic energy.

What Are Changing Lines?

In traditional I Ching casting:

  • Old Yang (9): A solid line that changes to broken
  • Old Yin (6): A broken line that changes to solid
  • Young Yang (7): A stable solid line
  • Young Yin (8): A stable broken line

Why They Matter

Changing lines indicate:

  • Areas of active transformation
  • Points requiring special attention
  • The direction of change
  • Specific advice for your situation

The Two Hexagrams

When you have changing lines, you receive two hexagrams:

1. Primary Hexagram: Your current situation

2. Relating Hexagram: The outcome or future direction
